Defense and avionics programs require the right test results, and they require the right test equipment, correctly calibrated to traceable standards. Miscalibrated instruments can invalidate an entire test campaign.

Aerospace heat treatment processes must meet AMS2750 requirements for instrument calibration, TUS frequency, and documentation. NADCAP audits examine the complete paper trail, and a missing TUS record can fail an otherwise compliant facility.

Structural and interior materials used in aerospace programs must be tested and documented against applicable standards before they can be incorporated into a design. Late-stage material rejection is one of the most common causes of schedule overrun.

Frequently asked questions

The primary EMC standard for airborne equipment is RTCA/DO-160, which covers both environmental conditions and electromagnetic compatibility. It is required for FAA and EASA certification of avionics. For defense electronics, MIL-STD-461 defines emissions and susceptibility requirements for equipment used on military platforms. Both standards require specific test equipment and calibration traceability.

NADCAP is the National Aerospace and Defense Contractors Accreditation Program, an industry-managed accreditation scheme for special processes in aerospace and defense. Heat treatment facilities supplying aerospace primes must hold NADCAP accreditation or supply to accredited facilities. NADCAP audits for heat treatment assess compliance with AMS2750, including TUS records, instrument calibration, and process documentation. A gap in any of these areas can result in failed audit findings that halt supply.

Defense R&D programs often require specialized instrumentation that is unavailable commercially, such as high-voltage pulse generators, nuclear measurement electronics, or custom sensor interfaces.
